Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Canada 2026 applications are now open at University of British Columbia (UBC), University of Toronto and McGill University. This is a fully funded scholarship for African students to pursue Masters and Doctoral degrees in Canada in 2027. Expression of Interest deadline is 6 September 2026.
About Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Canada
The Mastercard Foundation partners with top Canadian universities to provide 351 talented young Africans with access to quality education. After graduation, scholars return to Africa to drive economic growth and social transformation. The program covers everything and includes leadership development and global alumni network.
What Does the Scholarship Cover?
- Full tuition fees and books
- Return flights and immigration support
- Accommodation and room and board
- Monthly living stipend
- Health insurance
- Leadership development, mentorship and career support
Eligible Programs at UBC for 2027
- Master of Food and Resource Economics (MFRE)
- Master of Food Science (MFS)
- Master of Sustainable Forest Management (MSFM)
- Master of International Forestry (MIF)
- Master of Urban Forestry Leadership (MUFL)
- Master of Geomatics for Environmental Management (MGEM)
- Master of Data Science
At Toronto and McGill: Doctor of Public Health, Nutrition, Public Policy, Sustainable Agriculture.
Eligibility Requirements
- Be a citizen or refugee of an African country (including South Africa)
- Be 35 years old or younger (born 1990 or after)
- Have completed a Bachelor's degree
- Do NOT already have a Masters degree
- Meet academic requirements of chosen program
- Demonstrate leadership, community service and commitment to give back to Africa
- For UBC: English Proficiency - IELTS/TOEFL if degree not in English
- For Toronto/McGill: Must attend mandatory virtual info session to get application link
Important Dates 2026
- UBC Applications Open: 31 August 2026
- Expression of Interest Deadline: 6 September 2026
- Scholars Program Application: 15-30 September 2026
- UBC Faculty Application: 1-20 November 2026
- Toronto Doctoral Deadline: 1 October 2026 at 11:59 PM EST
- McGill Deadline: 21 August 2026 for first stage, 1 December 2026 for fee waiver applicants
How to Apply
- Decide your program from eligible list
- Submit Expression of Interest via Qualtrics link on UBC Mastercard site (General Stream or Refugee Stream)
- If eligible, you will be invited to submit full Scholars Program application with CV, two reference letters on official letterhead, transcripts and personal statements
- For Toronto and McGill, register and attend one mandatory info session to get application form
- If shortlisted, submit faculty application to university
