About The Role
Durban Port handles 60% of South Africa’s imports and exports. Every container needs documentation – Bill of Lading, commercial invoice, packing list, SAD500 customs declaration, permits. Export & Import Processing Officer is the person who ensures containers clear customs quickly and legally. Delays cost shipping lines R10,000+ per day in demurrage. So this job is high-pressure but essential. You will work in an office but liaise with SARS Customs, Transnet Port Terminals, shipping lines like Maersk, MSC, and clients.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
As Export & Import Processing Officer Durban: Process import and export documentation – check commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin. Prepare and submit SAD500, bill of entry via EDI to SARS Customs. Arrange shipping bookings, SLI, and ensure compliance with Incoterms 2020 – FOB, CIF, EXW. Liaise with clearing agents, freight forwarders, transporters to coordinate cargo movement from port to warehouse. Track shipments and update clients on ETA, delays, customs stops. Calculate duties, VAT and ensure correct HS tariff codes. Handle queries from SARS – request for information, inspections. Maintain files – every import/export file must be audit-ready for 5 years per SARS. Ensure compliance with ITAC permits, NRCS, Port Health for certain goods. Process claims for damaged or short-landed cargo.
Minimum Requirements
Matric plus Diploma or Degree in Logistics, Shipping, Supply Chain, International Trade is preferred. Minimum 2-3 years experience in import/export processing, freight forwarding or customs clearing. Knowledge of SARS Customs EDI system, CCS, and shipping documents is compulsory. Understanding of Incoterms, HS codes, and customs procedures. Computer literate – MS Office, ShipShape, CargoWise or similar freight software. Must be able to work under pressure – port operations run 24/7, deadlines are strict. Good communication – you will call SARS, clients, shipping lines daily. Must live in Durban or willing to relocate – this is office-based in Durban South. Must have clear criminal record – you handle high-value cargo.
Skills Needed
Attention to detail – one wrong HS code can cause R50k penalty. Time management – vessels don’t wait. Customs knowledge – SARS rules change often. Communication – calm under pressure when client shouts about delayed container. Problem solving – container stuck at customs, what to do? Teamwork – work with clearing, transport, warehouse teams.
Why This Job Is Good
Logistics is booming in Durban due to African Continental Free Trade Area. Import/export skills are scarce and portable – you can work anywhere with a port – Cape Town, Walvis Bay, Mombasa. R18k-R28k is good for mid-level officer, plus overtime, medical, pension. Opportunity to become Customs Compliance Manager, Freight Manager. Durban lifestyle – coastal city with lower cost than Joburg. Learn international trade – valuable skill for own import business later.
