About Primeserv Denverdraft
Primeserv Group is a JSE-listed staffing solutions company. Denverdraft is their skilled technical division that places artisans, operators and engineers. The client for this role is a heavy engineering workshop in Gauteng that manufactures components for mining, steel and construction. As Milling Machine Operator, you will work on conventional and possibly CNC milling machines to produce precision parts. This is workshop-based, not site-based, so you work in a controlled engineering environment with safety standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Your daily duties as Milling Machine Operator: Set up and operate horizontal and vertical milling machines to mill, drill, bore and shape metal components. Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints and job cards. Select correct cutting tools, speeds and feeds for different materials – steel, cast iron, aluminium. Measure finished components with micrometers, vernier calipers, gauges and ensure tolerance within 0.02mm. Perform routine maintenance on milling machines – cleaning, lubricating, changing tools. Work with horizontal lathe experience – the advert specifically asks for 5 years plus horizontal lathe experience, so lathe operation may be part of job. Ensure all work meets quality standards and safety procedures. Keep workshop clean and comply with OHS Act. Record production, downtime and material usage. Collaborate with fitters, turners and QC inspectors.
Minimum Requirements
Matric / Grade 12 plus Trade Test as Fitter, Turner, or Machinist is preferred. N3 or N4 Mechanical Engineering certificate is an advantage. 5 years plus relevant experience as Milling Machine Operator – this is mandatory in advert. Horizontal lathe experience is required – you must be able to operate horizontal boring mills or lathes. Ability to read engineering drawings is compulsory. Must be able to work with minimal supervision and meet deadlines. Must be physically fit – standing long hours, lifting heavy parts. Must have own transport or live near workshop in Gauteng. Must have clear criminal record and be willing to undergo medical and competency test.
Skills Needed
Precision measurement – micrometer, vernier, dial gauge. Knowledge of cutting speeds, feeds and depth of cut. Understanding of different metals and their machinability. Safety – lockout, PPE, machine guarding. Problem solving – fixing tool chatter, dimensional errors. Teamwork – workshop team of artisans. Time management – completing jobs on schedule. Quality focus – zero defects.
Why This Job Is Good
Milling operators are scarce skills in South Africa. With mining and manufacturing rebounding, demand is high. Gauteng is industrial hub – many workshops in Germiston, Boksburg, Kempton Park, Wadeville. Salary R18k-R35k is good for artisan, plus overtime at 1.5 rate. Contract can become permanent if client impressed. Primeserv offers weekly or monthly payroll, UIF, provident fund. Opportunity to upskill to CNC operator, programmer. For Campus Linc users studying mechanical engineering at TVET, this shows what industry wants – 5 years experience is built from learnership to operator.

Interview and Practical Test Tips
Be ready to answer: What is difference between climb and conventional milling? How do you calculate RPM for milling? How do you set zero on workpiece? Bring own measuring tools if you have them – shows professionalism. Wear safety boots to interview at workshop – safety culture. Example: For 100mm mild steel cutter at 30m/min, RPM = (1000 x V)/ (π x D) = 95 RPM. Know formulas.
